people. the people who are most immune are jews and chinese. >> reporter: he also chaired conspiracy theories that pesticides and plastic could be affecting children's sexuality. now kennedy's previewed some actions trump may take, including advising all u.s. water systems to remove fluoride that experts say is a public health benefit. kennedy also won popularity by focusing on nutrition and promising an overhaul of the fda, singling out the agency's suppression of psychedelics, raw milk, clean foods, sunshine and anything else that advances human health. some of trump's other picks also facing new scrutiny, including pete hegseth, his choice for defense secretary. overnight officials in monterey, california, releasing information from a police report confirming that hegseth was involved in a sexual assault investigation in 2017. it's unclear what hegseth's involvement was in the

investigation. the trump transition team saying hegseth has vigorously denied any and all accusations and no charges were filed. and on another highly controversial pick now former republican congressman matt gaetz for attorney general. the senate republicans say there could be enough opposition in the senate to sink his nomination. trump made clear he wants what are called recess appointments for some of these picks that would allow them to serve two years without any senate vote. overnight the senate majority leader john thune didn't rule that out, saying all options are on the table. >> peter, thank you very much. as the president-elect builds out the administration, one name frequently mentioned is elon musk. the tech billionaire has been by trump's side during the campaign and in the wake of the election and promises to play a big role in the next white house. nbc's capitol hill correspondent

and you know what i like having him here. >> reporter: he traveled with trump for his first trip back to washington since his election victory and in a report not confirmed by nbc news "the new york times" citing two iranian officials that says that musk met with iran's ambassador to the united nations in an attempt to smooth tensions between the countries. trump also reportedly hand the the phone to musk while talking to ukrainian president volodymr zelenskyy. but musk's close access to trump does not come without potential problems. the billionaire's investigators companies have major contracts with the federal government. his company spacex received billions of dollars it in federal projects. >> are you kidding me? >> reporter: his company tesla sells more electric cars than any other company. if trump slashes the federal incentives for evs, it could make it more difficult for other carmakers to enter the market. on capitol hill republicans seem open to letting the successful businessman have a crack at finding ways to make government work better.

no one should be surprised. president-elect donald trump on the campaign trail talked about the fact that he wanted to give rfk a big role in the health space, talked about the fact that 'wanted to overhaul the justice department, and by the way, that is a lot of what we heard from matt gaetz. so while some are viewing these picks as controversial, the reality is he signaled this was the direction that he is going in. the question becomes what happens with their confirmation process. well, some senators are expressing skepticism. i think the key point here, savannah, we haven't heard one republican senator say outright they will vote against these picks. so, at this point in time there is no reason to believe that these picks can't get confirmed. >> they may be controversial and explosive, but as you said, not splicing. there is this talk, and it may just be talk, if there is resistance the president-elect will use previously up to now

train tracks, even in popular parks as well. dylan is standing by with the forecast for the weekend. first, nbc's emilie ikeda from one of the fires burning in new jersey this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey there, craig. good morning to you. there have been roughly 1,300 wildfires that have broken out across the state this year. nearly half of them started burning within the last six weeks. it's made for the busiest firefall season here at coil airfield with firefighters relying on helicopters like these, not only to track blazes movements but to dump water, douse flames in hard-to-reach places. this morning there are growing fears strong winds could fan the flames of wildfires across the northeast over the next couple of days. in new york city, smoke seen above upper manhattan as a brush fire burned it week amid an historic dry spell in the big pumpkin.

>> as the dry conditions continue, we anticipate we will see more of these before rain comes. >> reporter: new york city's fire department says it responded to a record 229 brush fires, over a two-week period. the jennings creek fire burning in new york and new jersey is now 50% contained, nearly week after it started. so some schools are closed today as a precaution as crews use smaller controlled burns in an effort to contain the larger blaze. >> we are setting fire to fight the fire. don't be alarmed. it's where we wouldn't it. it's fire we are putting down. >> reporter: nearly 60% of the northeast is currently under moderate drought. with it especially pronounce inside new jersey, the state seeing the driest conditions in nearly 120 years. this fire in burlington county has been burning since july 4th. parts of pennsylvania, new york, and all of new jersey and delaware are under a drought watch and warnings with

voluntary water conservation efforts. climate scientists say if the northeast zunltd see rain soon we can expect more fires through the holiday season. the drought is so severe in some places, firefighters can no longer go to their same water sources, rivers, reservoirs to go down with the helicopters, pick up water and douse flames for wildfires. it's why across the region we hear from officials urging residents to conserve water with simple steps to take shorter showers, not run dishwashers or washing machines unless they are entirely full and use low flow showerheads, faucets and toilets. water becomes increasingly precious in this parched landscape. >> all the things your dad told you to do. >> right. >> don't stand with the refrigerator open. >> lights out, turn the lights off. dylan, a first look at the forecast. >> good morning. it is going to be very, very dry. in fact, we haven't had rain in more than a month.

with self-image and addiction. she opened up about her personal bat tulsa in her new book titled "elle: life, lessons, and learning to trust yourself." i was in a horrible downward spiral, she writes. often i would drink after i put my children to bed. i would sit down by myself and have shots of vodka. her alcoholism eventually landed her in rehab. getting sober renewed her commitment to health and led to a spiritual awakening. in 2014, the model and actress started her own wellness company. and in 2017, after being diagnosed with breast cancer and having two lumpectomy, she chose to go against her doctor's spena suggestions for conventional treatment, opting for a holistic approach, spending eight months in arizona undergoing alternative therapies. saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing i have done in my life. saying no to my inner sense

is what is the tool for us all to navigate life. >> i think what people will realize is you are a lot like every other woman. it seems surprising to us, but you were insecure in front of the camera. you didn't feel good enough. so many women walk through life to this moment not having that feeling. people say, but why did you have that feeling? how did you come through that? >> it's courage. courage to walk through those uncomfortable moments. get out of your comfort zone. for me, i wanted what modeling could bring me more it than i wanted to be comfortable in front. camera. so practice makes progress and progress makes process, and here i am today, you know, 40 years later still doing the same thing, in different ways. >> of course. >> i love how you wrote about sobriety. i think it's really inspiring. you talked about going to an aa meeting. you said, why would i ever be embarrassed to go to an aa meeting? maybe people should be

embarrassed about their behavior when they are drinking or not sober. your sobriety so so precious to you and so hard fought? >> there are two chapters that are very -- were very important for me to write. there was the recovery chapter and the how. so one is about stopping drinking. the other is about how to stay stopped. i just felt that those chapters were really important for people who are struggling or who have questions about any kind of addiction, because it's not just drinking. we can be addicted to fear. we can be addicted to drama, we could shop, have emotional relationships when we don't really want to. so, it's about really addressing those things that are behind the addiction, because the addiction is just the symptom. and for me drinking was just a symptom of other things. >> what was behind it? >> therein lies the journey if you read the book. >> it's all in there.

>> you know, a lot has been made about your journey with breast cancer, and you chose not to go through chemotherapy. as i was reading this part of your book it hit me because i think there are a lot of women who have gone through breast. i had, too. and doctors give you multiple answers to the same question. >> exactly. >> some say you need chemo. some say you don't need chemo. some say you can't make a mistake either way. it is a tricky choice. how did you come to your choice? >> well, exactly that. i saw many, many doctors, and there was no consistency in what to do. and -- >> it was not in your lymph nodes. so it made for multiple options? >> absolutely. and there was no real clear path and there was no assurance either way, as you say. and so the only thing you can do

is go inside and feel what feels right for you based on all of the information that you have and make an educated, intelligent decision, and follow it through 1,000%. dedicated, committed, persistent, and believe in what you are doing. that's the same for all life. but interestingly, that chapter that talks about cancer, there is only one in the book, so if you want to get the book for that one chapter, there is a lot more in it than what you will expect. it was really about how to navigate making choices when you are gripped with fear. that's really the tool, is, okay, it doesn't matter what the situation is because we all have situations where we're confused. >> and now you are cancer free at age 60. tell me about 60. i kind of dig 60.

level, like cranks it up. >> it's a different animal, but i love what they have done. difficult to make a musical into a terrific movie. and everybody involved was so devoted and in love with the material, and that character, you know, is interesting. there is some dark aspects to that. nothing is as it seems, as we know in this movie. there is nobody all good and all bad. but it that wizard, you know, there are leaders throughout human history who have seized and enhanced power through demonizing others. that's an ugly history. but, you know, even our early settlers, you know, they said that the indigenous people were satanic and witches, and how about animal cruelty that we bring up? >> there is a lot of layers to this. i did tease this. >> what? >> did you know he used to be into mime? i wanted to know -- >> how does it work? >> was miming going to be your thing? >> i wanted to be -- yes, i did.
